Eight intrepid Middle School students made a wintry trip to Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in the CEESA MS Speech and Debate competition this December. We were the first IICS team to travel to Baku, and this was the International School of Azerbaijan’s first CEESA event to host, so no one knew what to expect. We were delighted with the beauty of Baku, the warmth and welcome of the school and the host families, and with the incredible learning and success of our team at the tournament.
Our team made it to the finals in four of the five events (Original Oratory, Impromptu, Duet Acting, and Oral Interpretation), missing out only on the debate finals. We took home three medals! Most importantly, all team members had a great experience meeting, learning, and competing with talented students of international schools from Moscow, St Petersburg, Warsaw, Kyiv, Minsk, and, of course, Baku.
The team consisted of our veteran orators and actors Erim A., Tallulah B., Yavuz S., and Melissa W., as well as bold newcomers Melisa L., Aurica M., Eva M., and Derhan Y., under the guidance of Ms. Amanda Bond and Mr. Kevin Burns. Teammates Michael B. and Candyce H. could not travel with us and were sorely missed!
