Over the weekend 18 of our girls were in action in a football tournament at Robert College to promote participation of girls in sports in Turkey (@kizlarsahada). Fourteen schools from Istanbul joined the tournament and together with Robert College, IICS was able to provide two teams. Teams were split into four groups of four teams each, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the quarter-finals on the 28th of March.
In appalling weather conditions, our IICS Calves team (young Dolphins – Girls from grades 7-9) played two games in their group on Saturday morning (one team canceled due to the weather). In the first game, the Calves beat Koc High School 3-1, with 2 goals from Laura and another from Mimi. The girls then played their second game immediately after and beat Robert College’s first team 2-0, both goals being scored by Laura. It was a fantastic effort from our younger students, especially when you consider that the opposition teams consisted only of High School students.
Afternoon games were rescheduled for Sunday morning due to the weather and our IICS Dolphins team was left in the hands of our captain, Vanda. An early morning win over the British School 1-0 with a goal from Linn was followed by a tough loss to Gateway 3-0. The girls then regrouped and defeated Notre Dame de Sion 4-0 with a few goals from Ella and another from Linn. This means that the Dolphins finished in second place in the group and qualified for the quarter-finals on Saturday.
IICS, therefore, has 2 of the remaining 8 teams left in the tournament. Competition will be tough this Saturday with only the strongest teams remaining, but I’m sure our girls will represent the school in the same positive way that they always do. It’s nice to get the football season back in full swing!
