On Saturday 16 th September, IICS hosted the International Gateway Academy for our annual friendly football matches. This day has become a tradition at IICS over the past years and generally serves as a first opportunity for us to see how our five football teams are getting on after a few weeks of training.
With Ms. Thompson running the healthiest ever booster club stall and a large number of parents supporting our teams, the action got under way at 9.00am with our two Middle School teams playing 7-a- side games across the pitch. The IICS Middle School Boys team, playing under new head coach, Mert Kiroglu, played some beautiful football and impressed the crowd with their silky passing skills and movement off the ball. Two goals from Rodrigo and Carlos in the second half resulted in a comfortable victory and a pleasing performance.
Our Middle School girls, however, ran into perhaps the best football player we have even seen at that level. The Gateway Number 9 was unstoppable and scored all 7 goals in a 7-0 defeat for IICS. The girls, however, once they had realized the challenge they were facing, were determined that no other Gateway player should score against them, and this was accomplished. An improved second half resulted in a few opportunities for Melissa and Summer, but the ball just wouldn’t go in the net.
Next up was the High School Boys team. Coaches Pultz and Garret experimented with a few positional changes with the boys, but the expected quality and effort was on show from the
first whistle. Alvaro opened the scoring in the first half before Osman added two more for a comfortable lead. Gateway pulled two goals back later but our boys held on for a 3-2
The High School Girls followed the boys and dominated their game against a Gateway team that we have struggled to beat in recent years. First half goals from Mimi and DoWon were
the reward for a solid first half performance, while further goals from Maryam and Halima in the second half resulted in a 4-0 victory.
The final game of the day involved our Junior Varsity Boys with Coach Atilla, exhausted after refereeing all day up to that point. The boys looked very organized and ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Alvaro and Leo in the second half.
It’s always a pleasure hosting Gateway for this event. All of our students performed admirably and represented our school well. Our next challenges will be in a few weeks’ time
with our first ISL tournaments. Please wait for information from specific coaches for these events and make sure you find the time to come along and support our students again.
