The IICS Refugee Outreach Group (ROG) had a very successful first semester. We kicked off with International Day as an opportunity to raise awareness in the IICS community about the types of projects we have been involved in the last couple of years. Talented members of ROG had videos and pamphlets they had designed to be distributed on the day. This also allowed our students to interact one on one with our wonderful teachers, students, and parents to enlighten them on the type of work we do. The booth itself was a hub of creativity with face painting and an art activity to engage the younger members of the community.

The ROG also coordinated another successful winter clothing drive for Ok-Der, our chosen charity. The students managed to collect 42 boxes (enough to fill two minivans!) of warm clothing and shoes to be distributed to Istanbul’s refugee community.

Note: You can see from the photos our delivery day coincided with the Pajama Day spirit day, right before we closed for winter break!

This semester we hope to be planning an outreach day for refugee children with the Ad Dar community centre at the Hisar campus. We also are planning to run Handbags with a Heart, a donation project aimed primarily at women (donations of unwanted purses to be filled with personal items, etc). Both projects will require fundraising and organising, but based on our strong start this year I am confident that the ROG members will be even more successful!
