Photo elves, debunking myths about airplanes, Greek tragedy, consumerism, and the role of the media in the decline of democracy… what do these things have in common? The students of IICS chose these subjects and many others to research, practice, and present at the CEESA High School Speech & Debate tournament that took place 2-5 February in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Congratulations to our Speech & Debate Team! Not only did they perform to the highest level in their events, they were great at supporting each other and represented our school in an exemplary manner. This year EVERY student in the team got into the finals in at least one of their events. As a result, the words “from Istanbul…” was heard often during the awards ceremony! The IICS team was a powerhouse.

WHAT IT TAKES TO COMPETE IN SPEECH & DEBATE
The CEESA High School Speech & Debate tournament is a very demanding two-day competition. In this competition, students have to compete in two events of the five events to choose from: Debate, Duet Acting, Original Oratory (creating and delivering your own speech), Impromptu Speech (creating a speech based on a topic you are given with a very short preparation time of a few minutes), and Oral Interpretation (reading an excerpt from a book).

During the competition, the students perform three times in preliminary rounds, while the debaters debate the proposition four times: twice on the affirmative side of the argument and twice on the negative side. The debate topic this year was “Democracy has been weakened by the news media over the past 20 years.”

Our coaches this year, Mr. Burns and Mrs. Bond, had to judge in the preliminary rounds, so often they could not be with our students while they performed or debated. However, our team was great at supporting one another and giving encouragement and feedback to each other.
